Court advice

Losing your home and receiving a court summons is likely to be a very stressful situation for you and your family.

At Keyhouse we understand how these situations arise, but we also understand how to reduce their impact and avoid their most damaging knock-on effects.

If you are summoned to appear in court, effective representation is very important for a positive outcome – that’s why you should always resist the temptation to ignore the summons. Our fully trained Duty Advisors attend the region’s courts on Housing Possession days and will act on your behalf if you don’t have suitable representation of your own. The Duty Advisor will always act in your best interest and only after explaining the situation to you clearly: they are your best chance of escaping the most serious consequences.

If you do have a court hearing date coming up, you should take the following paperwork in order to be prepared for the hearing and strengthen your case:

  • Any letters you have from your landlord or mortgage company
  • Your tenancy agreement or lease
  • Any court papers
  • Your rent book or mortgage statement
  • Letters from the Housing Benefit office
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Recent wage slips, if you have them
  • Your benefit and tax credit award letter
  • Any letters about money your owe or debts you have

When you arrive at the court, simply ask for the Duty Advisor and they’ll help you from then onwards. You’ll find our Duty Advisors at the County Courts in Keighley, Skipton, York, Scarborough, Bridlington and Whitby.

25 years of support

Twenty-five years since that first Keighley hostel began catering for the region’s homeless, we’re very proud of the successful multi-discipline organisation we’ve become.

How have we done it?
