Advice & Guidance NVQ

To meet National Standards for Advice & Guidance NVQ.

Level 4: 8 units required – 4 mandatory units, plus 4 from 25 optional units.
Level 3:
6 units required – 3 mandatory units, plus 3 from 13 optional units.
Level 2:
6 units required – 3 mandatory units, plus 3 from 8 optional units.

To complete the NVQ the candidate will have to produce a portfolio of evidence to show how they meet the NVQ National Standards in their normal work.  To produce the portfolio the candidate will write explanations of how they meet the standards, produce evidence of accomplishment, obtain witness testimonies, answer questions and are observed carrying out some tasks by their Assessor.  The portfolio is verified (quality checked) by suitably qualified persons before the candidate is awarded the NVQ.  One important thing to note is that a NVQ is not pass or fail; if there is insufficient evidence provided there may be a need to produce more evidence to meet the gaps in the National Standards, but eventually the NVQ will be completed.

A really keen candidate could complete an NVQ in 3 months, though a more realistic timescale is between 6 and 12 months.  It all depends on how much time the candidate is willing and able to dedicate to working on their portfolio, particularly their own time.

If you decide to enrol any candidates we will need to carry out an induction session, which will take approximately 2 hours.  The candidate’s manager should be there for the first part of the induction (probably about ½ an hour), though they are welcome to stay for the whole induction, to ensure they are aware of their involvement and the work time commitment necessary.

Commitment

We will need a commitment from you to allow your candidate to the opportunity to work towards the NVQ in work time, and from your candidate to also work in their own time in order to complete all units as per the assessment plan.  We will ask everyone involved to sign an agreement to commit to the workload.  Because the candidate is not permitted to put anything confidential into their portfolio they have to record where that confidential information is stored.  The Assessors, IVs and EV may need access to some of your confidential records to allow them to witness that the evidence exists, but none of it will be removed or copied.  The only reason anyone will need to see the confidential information is to be sure that it actually exists and meets the standards required.

Cost for NVQs

As you probably know, NVQs are not cheap due to the amount of Assessor time needed for each candidate and we have spent a lot of time trying to find a suitable source of funding, so far with limited success.  Costs are shown below, if you want to meet to discuss anything about NVQs please call on 01535 211311 or via e-mail at david.coleman@keyhouse.co.uk.

Cost

Level 2 £1,150
Level 3 £1,300
Level 4 £1,500

Keyhouse may be able to access Train to Gain funding if the candidate is eligible, which will reduce the cost, or possibly cover the whole cost.

It may be necessary to charge travel costs at public transport rate if you are some distance from Keyhouse and your Assessor needs to allow additional travel time, though we would endeavour to keep this to a minimum.

Twenty-five years since that first Keighley hostel began catering for the region’s homeless, we’re very proud of the successful multi-discipline organisation we’ve become.

How have we done it?
